Mixed Number

Other times it becomes necessary to change an

Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number.

This is also done in three easy steps.

The Improper Fraction

9

5

Step 1:

Divide the numerator by the denominator to find the quotient and the

remainder.

9

5

9   ÷  5  =  1  with a remainder of  4

Step 2:

The whole number of the quotient, in this case 1, becomes

the whole number of the mixed fraction.

Step 3:

The remainder of the quotient, which is 4 in this example,

becomes the new numerator of the mixed fraction.

The denominator stays the same.

RULE

Changing an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number
Numerator ÷ Denominator = Quotient

Whole Number of Mixed Fraction = Whole Number of Quotient

Numerator of Mixed Fraction = Remainder of Quotient

The Denominator stays the same.

When the Remainder is 0, the answer is a Whole Number.
